Pastoring the dying and the mourning is challenging, sobering, and rewarding. It is challenging because we need great wisdom to know how to respond to people’s needs scripturally, truthfully, and compassionately.
It is sobering because we stand by our parishioners as they. Pastoral care of the terminally ill will be a regular aspect of pastoral ministry.
Each situation brings its own demands and will stretch to breaking point the spiritual resources of the pastor. But each situation will prove that Christ is able to equip his pastors for the task. In many ways, it’s the culmination of our life’s work. We should be well prepared to enter that sacred space as a priest of the Lord, and sitting in cultural discomfort as we invite people to face eternity and shepherd God’s flock.
